Squarespace vs Webflow: Which Is Better for Your Website?

Compare Squarespace and Webflow on current cost, usability, design systems, CMS, SEO, maintenance and who should govern the website after launch.

By 8 min read

Squarespace is generally better when a small-business owner wants a polished, hosted site they can assemble and edit themselves. Webflow is better when a designer or capable internal team needs precise responsive control, reusable components and a custom structured CMS.

Both can produce refined websites. The difference is who should govern the design system. Squarespace packages strong visual decisions into an accessible product. Webflow exposes more of those decisions to the person building the site.

Main decision

Do you want to manage a polished site yourself?

Do you have somebody who can use and maintain professional control?

Do not choose Webflow because it appears more advanced or Squarespace because it appears easier. Choose the operating model that will still work when the original build is six months old and somebody needs to publish, fix or extend it.

Current pricing and the cost of the working team

Squarespace's UK pricing on 26 August 2026 showed monthly equivalents of £12 for Basic, £17 for Core, £29 for Plus and £79 for Advanced when paid annually. Basic covered a normal website and selling with a 2% commerce transaction fee. Core removed that Squarespace transaction fee, added custom code and increased capability.

Webflow priced Site plans in US dollars. Starter was free on a webflow.io address with two static pages. Basic was $15 a month annually or $25 monthly for a custom-domain site without dynamic CMS content. Premium was $25 annually or $39 monthly and included up to 40 Collections and 20,000 CMS items.

Webflow also separates Site and Workspace billing. The Site plan hosts one site and unlocks its pages, CMS and domain features. A paid Workspace adds staging, collaboration and professional capabilities such as code export. A business hiring a Webflow designer should confirm who pays for each plan, which account owns the site and how it will be handed over.

The subscription is not the largest difference. Squarespace is designed for an owner or generalist to make the site. Webflow often makes financial sense when design quality or content structure justifies professional time. Include that time rather than comparing £12 with $25 and calling the calculation finished.

Ease of setup and editing

Squarespace guides the owner through a template, brand styles, sections and blocks. The same environment controls pages, blog posts, images, navigation and common commerce features. Most users can understand the boundaries without learning the vocabulary of front-end development.

Webflow's visual interface works with concepts such as classes, grid, flexbox, responsive breakpoints and component properties. A designer gains control because those concepts are visible. A beginner receives more ways to make a decision they do not yet understand.

That does not make Webflow difficult for every editor. Once the site is built, a marketer can update structured Collection items without changing the layout. A good handover limits editor access to the work they own and documents how components are used.

Squarespace makes building and editing part of the same owner workflow. Webflow can separate professional site construction from safer editorial publishing.

Templates, components and design freedom

Squarespace is known for polished templates because its layouts, spacing and typography begin inside a coherent system. An owner can adjust colours, fonts, sections and image treatments without designing every breakpoint from scratch.

Webflow begins closer to a blank professional canvas, even when a template is used. Designers can define reusable classes, components and variables, then control how they behave at different widths. This is valuable for an original brand system, unusual layouts and deliberate interactions.

More freedom creates governance work. A Webflow project needs naming conventions, reusable components and rules for when an editor may create a variation. Without them, the site can accumulate one-off classes and inconsistent behaviour.

Squarespace's constraints are an advantage when the site fits them. Webflow's control is an advantage when a designer has a reason to depart from them.

Content management and editorial scale

Squarespace provides pages, blogging, portfolio and commerce content through established product types. This is appropriate for many service sites and publications. Contributors work within the same hosted product, and the relationships between content types are mostly decided by Squarespace.

Webflow Premium lets the team design Collections for its own entities, such as articles, authors, services, locations or case studies. Fields can be connected to Collection templates and lists, so one data change updates every reference.

This supports a bespoke editorial model but requires planning. The team should decide field names, required relationships, URL patterns and editor roles before importing a large archive. A custom CMS structure is only helpful when it reflects real publishing work.

For a normal blog, Squarespace is quicker. For several related content types that need original templates and relationships, Webflow is more capable.

Squarespace vs Webflow for SEO

Squarespace covers page SEO titles, descriptions, editable slugs, URL mappings and built-in structured data. Webflow supports page-level and dynamic metadata, automatic or custom sitemaps, 301 redirects, canonical settings, indexing controls and custom schema.

Webflow offers more direct influence over semantic structure and rendered markup. That is useful for a designer or developer who understands headings, landmarks, performance and structured data. Squarespace makes more decisions centrally, which reduces both control and the number of ways an owner can misconfigure the system.

Both can rank. The decisive work remains understanding search intent, producing genuinely useful pages, linking related information, demonstrating expertise and keeping the site accurate. Neither a premium template nor a clean component tree substitutes for that.

Use Webflow's extra control when the project has a defined technical or structured-content requirement. Do not pay for professional complexity to solve a generic claim that one platform is “better for SEO”.

Ecommerce, scheduling and integrations

Squarespace offers selling on every paid plan and can connect Acuity Scheduling as a separate subscription. Its native ecosystem suits content-led stores, appointments and straightforward service journeys, with fees and features varying by plan.

Webflow has native Ecommerce plans and can connect external tools. Its distinguishing strength is the freedom to design the storefront and marketing experience. Retail operations such as complex inventory, shipping and multichannel selling may be better served by Shopify.

List the actual workflow before choosing: catalogue size, product variants, tax, shipping, bookings, customer emails, refunds and reporting. The visual freedom of the product page is only one part of commerce.

Maintenance, support and ownership

Both are hosted platforms. Squarespace and Webflow manage servers, SSL and their core product releases. The business still owns account security, domain control, content, integrations and testing.

Rebuild CMS, forms, ecommerce, search and other hosted features outside Webflow

Squarespace exports certain pages and one blog to WordPress XML. It does not export the complete design, styles, store or portfolio pages, drafts, custom CSS or every block.

Webflow's code export can provide HTML, CSS, JavaScript and assets from an eligible Workspace. It does not turn Webflow CMS, Ecommerce, site search, password protection or form processing into a portable hosted application. The destination needs replacements for those services.

The practical ownership question is not “can I download something?” It is “can the business operate, maintain and move the complete customer journey?”

Who should choose Squarespace?

Choose Squarespace when:

  • the owner wants to build and edit a polished site directly;

  • the project fits established page, blog, portfolio or store patterns;

  • strong defaults are more useful than breakpoint-level control;

  • one product and support relationship keeps the operation simple;

  • a future move being a rebuild is acceptable.

Who should choose Webflow?

Choose Webflow when:

  • an experienced designer will establish and govern the system;

  • original responsive layouts and interactions matter;

  • custom CMS Collections support a real publishing need;

  • editor and designer roles should be separated;

  • the budget includes the relevant Site, Workspace and professional costs.

What if you want neither editor?

Squarespace lets an owner manage a polished product. Webflow lets a professional build a more custom one. If the owner does not want a website-production role at all, compare providers rather than canvases.

Elkwood is our own managed service for straightforward UK small-business websites from £25 a month. It includes design, copy, hosting, technical upkeep and reasonable text and image changes within a defined scope. It is not intended for bespoke Webflow-style interaction work, complex ecommerce or an ongoing SEO campaign.

Review Elkwood's pricing and what is included to see whether that defined service matches the requirement. A capable Squarespace or Webflow specialist is the better choice when direct editor access or custom platform work is essential.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is Squarespace better than Webflow?

Squarespace is better for most owners building and editing a design led site themselves. Webflow is better when a skilled designer needs precise responsive control and a custom structured CMS.

Which is cheaper, Squarespace or Webflow?

Squarespace Basic displayed at £12 a month annually. Webflow Basic displayed at $15 but excludes dynamic CMS content; Premium was $25. Add Workspace needs and professional time before comparing totals.

Which is easier for a small business?

Squarespace is easier to build independently. A professionally configured Webflow site can be easy for content editors, but creating and extending its design system requires more skill.

Which is better for SEO?

Both support the fundamentals. Webflow provides more technical and structural control, while Squarespace provides a simpler managed implementation. Content quality and correct use of the controls matter more than the product name.

Can I switch from Squarespace to Webflow?

Yes, but expect to rebuild the design and transfer content. Inventory URLs, export eligible Squarespace content, recreate integrations, add redirects in Webflow and test before changing the domain.

What if I do not want to build the website myself?

Compare managed services, freelancers and agencies by deliverables, ownership, limits and ongoing support. Confirm who writes copy, supplies images, maintains hosting and handles future changes.
