Wix vs Squarespace: Which Is Better for a Small Business?

Wix is usually the better fit when you want a flexible visual editor, a broad range of built-in business tools and plenty of ways to extend the site. Squarespace is easier to keep visually coherent, particularly for portfolios, service businesses and content-led sites. Neither removes the need to plan the pages, write the copy, choose the images and maintain the result.

That last point decides more small-business projects than a feature comparison. If you enjoy shaping a website and can protect time for it, both platforms are capable. If you want somebody else to create and manage the site, choosing between two do-it-yourself builders may be the wrong first question.

Wix vs Squarespace at a glance

This is not a scorecard with a universal winner. Wix’s flexibility is valuable if you use it deliberately. Squarespace’s constraints are valuable if they stop the site becoming inconsistent.

Current UK pricing and the real project cost

The prices below were displayed to a UK visitor on the official pricing pages on 26 August 2026. They are monthly equivalents for annual subscriptions paid upfront. Promotions, VAT, renewal pricing and checkout totals can change, so confirm the final figure before buying.

Wix was advertising a temporary 50% discount on selected plans when checked. I have used the displayed list prices above rather than treating a short-term offer as the normal cost.

The subscription is only one part of the decision. Budget for domain renewal, professional email, paid extensions, payment processing, photography and specialist help. Then account for your own time.

A builder can be inexpensive as software and expensive as a project. If it takes 35 hours to learn the editor, structure the pages, rewrite the copy and fix the mobile layout, those hours belong in the comparison even though they never appear on an invoice.

Which is easier to set up and edit?

Both provide templates, visual editing, hosting and business features. The difference is the decisions they ask you to make.

Wix gives you more ways to build

Wix’s editor is the more permissive canvas. You can start from a template or generated starting point, reposition elements and add functions from a large product ecosystem. That flexibility suits an owner with a clear visual idea or a business that needs bookings, events, a store or other connected tools in one account.

The cost of freedom is decision load. More layout control creates more opportunities to introduce inconsistent spacing, type sizes and mobile behaviour. A template is a starting structure, not a substitute for design judgement.

Squarespace keeps more decisions inside a system

Squarespace’s section and block approach helps keep typography, spacing and page patterns consistent. Its templates suit image-led work, portfolios, hospitality and professional services.

The same guardrails can become frustrating when a design needs an unusual interaction or fine-grained placement. Squarespace Core and above expose CSS and JavaScript customisation, but custom code introduces work that the normal visual editor was meant to avoid.

Design quality depends on restraint, not the platform name

Squarespace has the stronger reputation for polished design because its defaults and constraints make a coherent result easier. Wix provides more expressive freedom and a much larger template range. Either can produce an excellent or poor website.

For a small business, the important design questions are practical:

• Can a visitor understand the offer in a few seconds?

• Do headings, buttons and spacing follow a consistent hierarchy?

• Is the type comfortable to read on a phone?

• Do the images look like the same business?

• Is the enquiry or purchase route obvious?

• Can the owner add a page without breaking the visual system?

If you choose Wix, define a small set of layout and type rules before filling pages. If you choose Squarespace, select a template for its page patterns rather than its demo photography.

Wix vs Squarespace for SEO

Both platforms cover the SEO fundamentals required by a normal small-business site. Wix lets editors customise title tags, meta descriptions, URL slugs, canonical tags, indexing and structured data. Squarespace provides page SEO titles and descriptions, editable slugs, URL mappings for redirects and built-in structured data.

This means neither platform is inherently disqualified from ranking. The larger variables are the search intent you choose, the usefulness of the page, internal linking, local relevance, reputation and whether the site remains technically sound.

There are still platform boundaries. You cannot control every rendering, caching or code decision in the way a developer can on a custom stack. That matters for unusual technical requirements, but most small-business SEO failures are more basic: thin service pages, generic copy, missing location evidence, poor titles and no plan for earning attention.

Do not buy an “SEO-friendly” builder and assume the work is finished. The controls make optimisation possible. They do not decide what your customers need to read.

Ecommerce, integrations and growth tools

Wix Core is the first Wix tier in the checked comparison to include payments and basic ecommerce. Higher tiers increase storage, collaborators and the level of ecommerce and marketing tools. Wix is attractive when you want bookings, events, a shop and marketing functions within a broad native ecosystem.

Squarespace now allows selling on every paid plan. Its official UK page showed a 2% online-store transaction fee on Basic and 0% on Core and above, separate from payment-processing charges. Higher plans reduce some processing fees and add commerce capability.

Compare the actual checkout, tax, shipping, booking and reporting needs rather than the word “ecommerce”. A specialist platform may suit a serious retail operation, while advanced commerce is wasteful if the site only needs enquiries.

Maintenance, support and ownership

Wix and Squarespace manage hosting, platform security and software releases. That removes the plugin-update routine associated with a self-hosted WordPress installation. The owner remains responsible for content accuracy, account access, domain renewals, integrations, privacy settings and checking that customer journeys work.

Wix records saved and published versions in Site History, although some app data does not revert with the page design. Squarespace advertises 24/7 customer support. Support helps you use the product; it is not an outsourced website manager.

Ownership also needs a precise definition. You own your business content and can retain a domain with an independent registrar. You do not receive a portable copy of the platform.

Wix states that a Wix site must be hosted and operated on Wix’s servers. Squarespace can export certain pages, one blog and some blocks to a WordPress-format XML file, but store pages, portfolios, drafts, style settings and custom CSS are among the items that do not export. Moving either site can therefore become a rebuild.

Who should choose Wix, Squarespace or neither?

Choose Wix when

• you want detailed visual control and are prepared to check mobile layouts;

• a wide mix of bookings, events, ecommerce or marketing tools is valuable;

• you enjoy learning software and expect to manage the site yourself;

• the site will remain on Wix for the foreseeable future.

Choose Squarespace when

• design consistency matters more than pixel-level freedom;

• the website is content, portfolio or service led;

• you prefer a smaller set of strong layout patterns;

• the built-in commerce level matches a straightforward selling need.

Choose neither when

• you do not want to write, design and assemble the website;

• you need bespoke application behaviour or complex operational integrations;

• full code portability is a firm requirement;

• the business needs ongoing judgement and content changes, not another tool to administer.

What if you do not want to build the website yourself?

A done-for-you service and a website builder are different products. With either builder, you still supply or commission the structure, copy, images, testing and ongoing changes.
